Benefactor/AssistantMr. Josiah Bounderby of Coketown
Mr. Bounderby is a wealthy citizen of Coketown. At The McChoakumchild School, Mr. Bounderby helps reinforce the idea of teaching only Facts. He believes that students should be taught Facts, not Fancy (i.e imagination, creativity, childhood, wonder).

Mr. McChoakumchild has been educated in all the courses that are offered at the school. "He and some one hundred and forty other schoolmasters had been lately turned at the same time, in the same factory, on the same principles..." (7) Mr. McChoakumchild is a well-versed teacher and is always ready to provide students with the best education he can offer.
TeacherMr. Thomas Gradgrind
"A man of realities. A man of facts and calculations. A man who proceeds upon the principle that two and two are four, and nothing over, and who is not to be talked into allowing for anything over." (2) He strongly believes that Facts are more important than Fancy. In fact, he believes that we should "discard the word Fancy altogether!" (7) Mr. Gradgrind's method of teaching is to root out all the useless information and to plant only Facts.
